Fear to Flourish – Overcome Common Mindset Blocks

Sharing who you are and what you do online can feel like standing under the spotlight! The fear of judgment, imperfection, or even success itself can paralyze even the most talented entrepreneurs, preventing them from showing up and taking the action they really want to take, to achieve their dreams. The path to success is one where we have to work through mindset issues, and I can tell you first hand, it doesn’t matter where you are on the path, there is always more to unpack (but it gets easier, I promise!).

It’s ultimately a journey filled with growth, self-discovery, and the joy you get from impacting lives in amazing ways. Today I’m going to share the common mindset blocks I find my clients are dealing with, and ways you can start to resolve them. Remember, unpacking mindset issues is a process, and one you may have to repeat time and again, as your income and influence increase.

First up, let’s talk about the common mindset issues.

Common Mindset Fears and Barriers

Fear of Judgment and Criticism
The thought of negative feedback or judgment can be daunting. Many entrepreneurs worry about not being good enough or fear that their work will not be received well. But worrying about this is holding you back from being who you are and achieving what you really want.

Ask yourself this – what is the worst thing that can happen if someone judges you or gives a criticism? The answer is actually nothing, and I believe other people’s opinions of us are actually none of our business! So go forward and be you, leave any negative talk from others in your dust!

Fear of Vulnerability
Sharing your work online often feels like opening the door to your soul, allowing the world to see your deepest passions and vulnerabilities. This exposure can be terrifying. The thing is though, it’s getting to know who you are, what you stand for and the passion behind what you do, that helps your audience align with you. So by holding back being vulnerable could actually be hurting your business. Mind you, you don’t have to share every piece of your life, just enough so your audience can know, like and trust you.

Ask yourself this – would it really be that bad to show a bit of who I am online, like my hobbies or why I’m passionate about what I do? In most cases the answer is no. Remember you don’t have to share everything, just what you’re comfortable sharing, and that relates to your business (that’s why you’ll never see me post a food pic from a cafe, as that has nothing to do with me or my business).

Imposter Syndrome
The nagging doubt that you’re not as competent as others perceive can be paralyzing. Entrepreneurs often fear being exposed as a “fraud,” especially when sharing new ideas or ventures. And to be brutally honest, I don’t even personally believe in imposter syndrome – I think it’s a great excuse you give yourself, that excuses you from doing the work to build your business. But whether or not you believe in imposter syndrome, there are steps forward you can take.

Ask yourself this – if I believe I have imposter syndrome, why? You all have skills, experience, qualifications and credentials for what you do, that puts you leaps ahead of any client that comes your way. So the hard truth is, imposter syndrome is a lie you’re telling yourself, to stop yourself from even trying. Stand up strong in the skills you have and just “go do the thing”.

Fear of Failure
The possibility of failing publicly can deter many from even starting. Entrepreneurs might worry about the impact of failure on their reputation and future endeavours.

Ask yourself this – what is the worst thing that can happen if I fail? The reality is, the worst thing would be you are EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE NOW. No further forward, no further back, but with a huge amount of learning you can take onboard to move forward. So it’s time to step up and have a go. As Yoda said friends, “do or do not, there is no try”.

If you’re struggling with any of these mindset issues, or something else that’s niggling away at your confidence and stifling your ability to move forward, here are some strategies I’ve used with myself and clients over the years, to help them overcome the blocks.

Start Small and Build Confidence
You don’t need to launch with a grand gesture. Begin by sharing small pieces of your work or thoughts in spaces where you feel most comfortable. As you receive positive feedback and engage in supportive communities, your confidence will grow, paving the way to share more broadly.

Build a Support System
Surround yourself with peers, mentors, and friends who understand your journey and can offer constructive feedback and encouragement. A support system can bolster your confidence, provide perspective, and remind you of your worth, especially during moments of doubt. My free group, Heart-Led Entrepreneurs Hub is a great space to get the community and support you need to move forward.

Embrace Vulnerability as Strength
Brene Brown, a renowned researcher on vulnerability, asserts that vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change. By embracing your vulnerabilities and sharing your true self, you connect more deeply with your audience, fostering trust and authenticity. I always remember the day I shared a post, showing that in my rush to get to school, I’d left home with two different shoes on! The engagement on my page grew so much that day that Meta froze my account for 24 hours, thinking I’d done something dodgy! People love “real” so give them exactly that.

Educate Yourself
Fear often stems from the unknown. By educating yourself on the best practices for sharing online, understanding your target audience, and learning how to protect your intellectual property and privacy, you can mitigate risks and feel more secure in sharing. Neurologically, our brain is hard-wired to keep us “safe” by keeping us in our comfort zone. Stepping outside out comfort zone may feel a bit scary, but there’s such benefit on the other side.

Acknowledge and Accept Imperfection
Perfectionism can be a major roadblock. Accept that mistakes are part of the growth process and that your work will evolve over time. Sharing your journey, including the ups and downs, can be incredibly inspiring for others. As a dyslexic person with ADHD, I can’t count the number of times I’ve put a post or email out with a typo! Yes, a number of people will respond to let me know, a few in not a very nice way, but those that know me accept that a few typos are just par for the course. So don’t let little things worry you.

Develop a Strong “Why”
Connect deeply with why you want to share your work. Whether it’s to empower others, share knowledge, or leave a legacy, a strong why can be a powerful motivator that keeps you moving forward, even when fear creeps in.

Reflect on Success Stories
There are countless stories of entrepreneurs who overcame their fears to share their work online, leading to incredible opportunities, growth, and impact. Allow these stories to inspire you and remind you of what’s possible.
