What’s Really Happening in the Market Right Now
2026 has been a challenging year for many practitioners.
Across conversations with clinic owners, naturopaths, nutritionists and wellness professionals, I’m hearing many of the same themes:
- Slower enquiries
- Longer decision-making times
- Cost-of-living pressure
- Marketing fatigue
- Questions about AI
- Concerns about increasing competition
The good news? You’re probably not imagining it, and you’re not the only one experiencing it. Let’s look at what I’m seeing in the practitioner market right now.
Private Health Rebates Are Returning
After years of uncertainty, private health rebates for naturopathy and Western herbal medicine are gradually returning.
While the government approved the changes in 2025, implementation by health funds has been slow.
Some funds have already returned rebates, while many of the larger providers are still catching up.
What interests me most is what I’m seeing in practice.
Since reopening Health Haven, a significant proportion of enquiries have included questions about private health rebates and HICAPS availability.
In a tighter economic environment, clients are paying close attention to anything that helps reduce out-of-pocket costs.
If you’re eligible for provider numbers and rebate programs, now is the time to ensure everything is in place.
The Mid-Year Revenue Gap Is Real
Every year I see a similar pattern.
As we move into June and July, many practices experience a temporary slowdown.
It’s easy to assume something has gone wrong.
It usually hasn’t.
This period is often influenced by:
- End-of-financial-year distractions
- School holidays
- Seasonal spending shifts
- Delayed healthcare decisions
This year, those normal seasonal factors are being amplified by broader economic pressures.
Before you panic, remember:
A quieter period does not automatically mean your marketing has failed.
A quieter period does not mean you’re a bad practitioner.
Sometimes it’s simply a season.
Clients Are Managing Cash Flow
The biggest shift I’m seeing isn’t necessarily a lack of demand.
It’s caution.
Clients are:
- Spacing appointments further apart
- Taking longer to commit
- Being more selective about spending
That doesn’t necessarily mean they’ve stopped valuing your services.
More often, they’re managing competing financial pressures.
This means practitioners need to become better at communicating value.
Clients need to understand:
- What they’re working towards
- How long treatment is likely to take
- What progress looks like
- Why ongoing care matters
The clearer the journey, the easier it becomes for clients to stay committed.
The AI Conversation Isn’t Going Away
AI is dominating business conversations right now.
Many practitioners are worried they’re falling behind.
Others are feeling overwhelmed by yet another thing they’re supposedly meant to master.
My perspective is simple:
Don’t let AI distract you from the fundamentals.
A well-structured website, useful content, strong client relationships and clear expertise still matter enormously.
AI can be a useful tool.
It can help with:
- research
- brainstorming
- outlining ideas
- improving efficiency
But it cannot replace:
- clinical judgment
- practitioner experience
- trust
- human connection
Those remain your competitive advantage.
Differentiation Matters More Than Ever
One of the biggest shifts I’m seeing is the explosion of online visibility.
It’s never been easier to build a website.
It’s never been easier to publish content.
It’s never been easier to appear like an expert online.
Which means simply having a niche is no longer enough.
Practitioners need an edge.
That doesn’t mean creating something revolutionary.
It means being clear about:
- what you stand for
- who you help
- how you approach your work
- why clients choose you
The practices that stand out today are often the ones with the clearest identity.
What I’d Focus On Right Now
If your practice feels slower than usual, resist the urge to panic.
Instead, focus on activities that build trust and connection.
Things like:
- Reconnecting with past clients
- Referral campaigns
- Community partnerships
- Local networking
- Educational events
- Strengthening existing relationships
Not everything has to happen online.
In fact, many of the highest-converting opportunities still happen through real-world conversations.
Your Mid-Year Practice Check-In
Before the financial year ends, spend some time reviewing your numbers.
Look at:
- Revenue trends
- Conversion rates
- Retention rates
- Enquiry sources
- Client lifetime value
Remember:
Numbers aren’t good or bad.
They’re information.
They help you understand what’s working, what isn’t, and where your next opportunity might be.
Final Thoughts
The practitioner market is changing.
Not collapsing.
Not disappearing.
Changing.
The practitioners who thrive over the next few years won’t necessarily be the loudest.
They’ll be the ones who continue building trust, communicating value, staying visible and adapting to changing conditions.
Because while markets evolve, the fundamentals remain the same.
Strong relationships.
Clear positioning.
Consistent visibility.
And great care.
Those things never go out of style.
